A lead screw is a precision threaded rod, often PTFE-coated to reduce friction and flaking, that converts rotational motion into controlled linear movement because, as the screw rotates, a correspondingly threaded nut is forced to travel along the threads and move a load along a single linear axis with only one degree of freedom. Lead screw assemblies are available in a variety of diameters, thread profiles, and lead configurations to support different load capacities, speeds, and positioning requirements. Motorized assemblies are listed separately as screw actuators. The screws are precision-rolled from 300 Series stainless steel with a PTFE coating to prevent screw flaking. Assemblies include round, triangular, and rectangular nuts in both traditional and anti-backlash designs. The Constant Force™ Anti-Backlash nut employs a spring to uniformly apply radial pressure throughout the motion profile, ensuring consistent performance and delivering 2–4 times less backlash over the product’s lifespan. The lead screws are precision rolled at PBC Linear and straightened in-house using our Italian Galdabini PAS 4 STEP automated straightening machine to maintain lead accuracy tolerances of approximately ±0.003 inches per foot (76 µm per 300 mm), exceeding the published specifications of many competing products by approximately three times.
PTFE coatings promote smoother and quieter operation, improve resistance to corrosion and contamination, and, through advanced coating processes, help prevent flaking or particle generation in demanding or clean-environment applications
