A lead screw, also called a leadscrew, is a precision threaded rod that converts rotary motion into controlled straight-line movement by causing a correspondingly threaded nut to travel along the screw and move a load on a single linear axis in what is called a lead screw assembly. Lead screw nuts are available in different shapes and styles, including the round, triangular, and rectangular nut categories shown below, while screws are offered in multiple diameters, thread profiles, pitches, leads, starts, and lengths for different loads, speeds, travel distances, and positioning requirements. Pitch is the distance between adjacent threads, lead is the distance the nut travels per screw revolution, and a start is one continuous helical thread; pitch and lead are equal on a single-start screw, while lead equals pitch multiplied by the number of starts on a multi-start screw.

What is thread handedness and how does it relate to screw rotation direction?
Thread handedness describes whether a screw has right-hand or left-hand threads. In a typical lead screw assembly, the screw rotates and drives a matching threaded, non-rotating nut axially. The direction of that axial movement depends on both thread handedness and rotation direction. A right-hand thread and a left-hand thread will move the nut in opposite directions when rotated the same way. For a right-hand thread, turning the screw clockwise moves the nut away from the viewer when the screw is viewed from its end, assuming the nut is prevented from rotating.
