A lead screw, also called a leadscrew, is a precision threaded rod that converts rotary motion into controlled straight-line movement by causing a correspondingly threaded nut to travel along the screw and move a load on a single linear axis in what is called a lead screw assembly. Lead screw nuts are available in different shapes and styles, including the round, triangular, and rectangular nut categories shown below, while screws are offered in multiple diameters, thread profiles, pitches, leads, starts, and lengths for different loads, speeds, travel distances, and positioning requirements. Pitch is the distance between adjacent threads, lead is the distance the nut travels per screw revolution, and a start is one continuous helical thread; pitch and lead are equal on a single-start screw, while lead equals pitch multiplied by the number of starts on a multi-start screw.
PBC Linear lead screw assemblies combine precision-rolled, PTFE-coated 300 Series stainless steel screws with self-lubricating, PTFE-infused Frelon® composite polymer nuts to reduce friction, resist coating flake-off, distribute thread loads, and provide maintenance-free motion. Metric screw diameters range from 6mm to 16mm, with lead options from 1mm to 25mm, along with corresponding inch configurations. Round, triangular, and rectangular nuts are offered in traditional and Constant Force™ Anti-Backlash designs, with the anti-backlash nut using spring pressure to maintain thread engagement and deliver 2–4 times less backlash over its lifespan. PBC Linear precision-rolls and straightens its lead screws in-house using an Italian Galdabini PAS 4 STEP automated straightening machine to maintain lead accuracy of approximately ±0.003 inches per foot (76µm per 300mm), about three times more precise than many published competitor specifications and common industry standards.
