Linear guides consist of carriages attached to linear rails, shafts, or raceways that use sliding or rolling contact to enable linear motion. Sliding-contact systems include self-lubricating, gliding surface plain bearing guides for quiet operation, contamination resistance, and harsh environments, using engineered liner materials such as FrelonGold®. Rolling-contact systems include several configurations: V-groove guides, which use V-wheels on carriages rolling along V-rails that may incorporate precisely machined stainless steel raceways for easy installation and alignment; recirculating ball bearing (profile rail) guides for high load capacity and rigidity; and cam roller linear guides, which use rolling-element carriages on hardened or machined raceways to support higher speeds and heavier loads, with options ranging from compact industrial assemblies to heavy-duty systems like Hevi-Rail® that use case-hardened steel rollers on robust rails for material-handling and factory-automation applications.
