Lead Screw Linear Actuator Motor Assemblies Captive and Non-Captive

Lead Screw Linear Actuators – Captive, External & Non-Captive

Lead screw linear actuators use programmable stepper motors, a threaded lead screw, and a mating nut to convert controlled motor rotation into precise linear movement. Captive actuators keep the motor stationary while a non-rotating screw extends and retracts to move a load, while non-captive actuators allow the screw to pass completely through the motor for longer travel and flexible mounting. In external-nut lead screw actuators, the motor rotates the screw without extending it from or passing it through the motor, forcing a restrained external nut to travel axially along the screw and move the attached load. Although technically distinct, external-nut models are grouped below in the captive subcategory because the motor and screw remain together as a fixed assembly and the moving output stays outside the motor. PBC Linear actuators use precision-rolled, PTFE-coated 300 Series stainless steel screws and self-lubricating Frelon® composite nuts for low-friction, maintenance-free operation. Round, triangular, and rectangular nuts are available in standard and Constant Force Technology™ anti-backlash designs, with NEMA 08, 11, 14, 17, and 23 stepper motors providing programmable control of position, speed, timing, and direction.

Lead Screw Linear Actuators – Captive, External & Non-Captive

51 products

Lead screw linear actuators are motorized, programmable leadscrew assemblies that use a threaded lead screw and mating nut to convert rotary motor motion into controlled, precise and repeatable linear movement. Captive actuators keep the motor stationary while a non-rotating screw extends and retracts from the motor to move an attached load over a relatively short stroke. Non-captive actuators allow the screw to pass completely through the motor, supporting longer travel and flexible mounting because either the motor or the screw can become the moving output.

External-nut lead screw actuators use a third configuration in which the screw is integrated with the motor shaft and rotates without extending from or passing through the motor. The external nut is restrained from rotating, forcing it to travel axially along the screw and move the attached load. Although technically distinct from a captive actuator, the external-nut design is included in the captive subcategory because the motor and screw remain in a fixed assembly and the linear output follows a controlled path outside the motor rather than passing through it.

PBC Linear lead screw actuators combine precision-rolled, PTFE-coated 300 Series stainless steel screws with self-lubricating Frelon® PTFE-based polymer composite nuts to reduce friction and wear, resist coating flake-off, and support maintenance-free operation. Round, triangular, and rectangular lead screw nuts are available in standard and Constant Force Technology™ anti-backlash designs, allowing the nut shape and backlash-control method to be matched to the mounting and positioning requirements.

Available with NEMA 08, 11, 14, 17, and 23 hybrid stepper motors, these actuators provide programmable control of position, speed, timing, and direction for robotics, automation equipment, CNC machinery, medical devices, electronics manufacturing, and industrial positioning systems. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between external, captive, and non-captive lead screw actuators?
External lead screw actuators use a nut that is external to the motor assembly. In these systems, the motor rotates the lead screw while the non-rotating nut travels linearly along the threads to move the attached load. The screw itself rotates while remaining fixed in position. In captive lead screw actuators, the nut is internal to the motor assembly and one end of the lead screw is retained within the motor so the screw cannot rotate. The motor drives an internal threaded mechanism that forces the screw to extend and retract linearly from the motor body. Because part of the screw must always remain engaged inside the actuator, captive designs are generally used for shorter travel distances. In non-captive lead screw actuators, the nut is also internal to the motor assembly, but the lead screw passes completely through the motor instead of being retained within it. In one common configuration, the screw rotates while the motor and attached load travel linearly along it. In another configuration, the motor remains stationary while the lead screw both rotates and moves linearly through the motor. Non-captive actuators are often used for longer travel lengths and are commonly paired with linear guides to improve stiffness, alignment, and load capacity.
Do lead screw actuators require additional guidance?
Lead screw actuators are designed to provide linear motion but are not intended to handle significant side loads or moments on their own. In many applications, especially with non-captive designs, a separate linear guide is used to improve alignment, increase stiffness, and support higher load capacities.
