Ball Screw Linear Actuator with NEMA Motor

Ball Screw Linear Actuators

Ball screw linear actuators combine a ball screw, ball nut, and motor to convert motor rotation into controlled linear motion. PBC Linear BS Series miniature ball screw actuator assemblies use an external-nut design in which the motor rotates the exposed ball screw while the restrained cylindrical or flanged nut travels axially along it. The pre-assembled units are available in NEMA 08, 11, 14, 17, and 23 frame sizes with six standard screw-diameter-and-lead combinations: 6mm × 1mm, 6mm × 2mm, 8mm × 1mm, 8mm × 2mm, 8mm × 2.5mm, and 10mm × 2mm. Standard configurations are supplied without preload, while preload is available to reduce play and increase rigidity and positional accuracy. Polymer wipers at both ends of the nut help block debris and retain lubrication around the recirculating balls. Standard and custom journal machining is available for one or both screw ends; a journal is the machined end section that fits a bearing, coupling, motor connection, or support block. Fixed and floating end blocks are also available to support the screw while allowing for alignment and thermal expansion. For applications requiring more configuration choices, the BE Series offers the same five NEMA frame sizes and 6mm–10mm screw-diameter range with additional motor lengths, lead options, nut styles, and performance combinations.

Features & Specifications of Ball Screw Linear Actuator Motor Assemblies

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a motorized ball screw actuator?
A motorized ball screw actuator is a linear motion device that integrates a motor, ball screw, and nut into a single assembly to convert rotary motion into precise linear movement.
What are miniature ball screw actuators used for?
Miniature ball screw actuators are used in applications that require compact size, high precision, and efficient linear motion, including medical devices, automation systems, semiconductor equipment, and robotics.
What are the advantages of ball screw actuators?
Ball screw actuators provide high efficiency, low friction, precise positioning, and long service life compared to other linear motion solutions.
What is the difference between a ball screw and a lead screw?
Ball screws use recirculating ball bearings to reduce friction and improve efficiency, while lead screws rely on sliding contact, resulting in higher friction and lower efficiency.
What does preload mean in a ball screw actuator?
Preload is the internal tension applied to a ball screw assembly to eliminate backlash, increase stiffness, and improve positioning accuracy.
How do you choose a ball screw actuator?
Choosing a ball screw actuator involves evaluating force, speed, stroke length, positioning accuracy, available space, and whether a standard or customizable configuration is required.
What is a NEMA stepper motor?
A NEMA stepper motor is a standardized motor defined by its mounting dimensions, commonly used in motion control systems for precise and repeatable positioning.
What are fixed and floating bearing configurations?
A fixed bearing supports axial and radial loads and locates the screw, while a floating bearing allows for thermal expansion and prevents binding.
What is the benefit of integrated linear actuators?
Integrated linear actuators reduce assembly time, improve alignment, save space, and simplify system design by combining motor and mechanical components into one unit.
When should you choose a customizable actuator instead of a standard one?
A customizable actuator is best when specific force, speed, resolution, or mounting requirements cannot be met by standard, ready-to-ship configurations.
