Miniature Motorized Ball Screw Assemblies

Ball screw linear actuators pair a programmable stepper motor with a precision screw and recirculating ball nut to create controlled linear travel. Hardened steel balls roll between the screw and nut instead of relying on sliding thread contact, reducing friction and supporting efficient, smooth, and repeatable movement at higher speeds. The screw lead sets the travel produced by each motor revolution: smaller leads generally improve thrust and positioning resolution, while larger leads increase linear travel speed.

PBC Linear® offers miniature ball screw actuators through both the BE Series and BS Series. Each line uses an external-nut arrangement: the motor turns the ball screw, thus forcing a restrained external ball nut to move axially along it. Both lines now include off-the-shelf products with established specifications. The BE Series additionally supports a wider selection of configurable motors, screw dimensions, leads, nut styles, journals, and accuracy grades. The information below focuses on the BE Series.

Ball screw linear actuators of the BE Series are available with NEMA 08 through NEMA 23 programmable stepper motors for compact applications requiring controlled speed, thrust, accuracy, and travel. Standard products combine predefined actuator lengths, motor frame sizes, motor body lengths, screw diameters, leads, and external nut styles for easier product selection. Configurable BE assemblies remain available when an application requires specialized performance, mounting dimensions, or machined screw journals.

The programmable stepper motors allow control over position, travel distance, speed, acceleration, timing, direction, and the number of motor revolutions. Multiple motor lengths and ball screw configurations allow engineers to select the appropriate balance of available torque, axial thrust, positioning resolution, and linear speed.

BE Series ball screw assemblies provide mechanical transmission efficiency greater than 90%. This allows them to produce comparable thrust with substantially less drive torque than a conventional lead screw actuator. Their recirculating ball nut construction also supports smooth high-speed travel, accurate positioning, and consistent repeated movement in automation, machine-building, medical, laboratory, electronics, and industrial positioning systems.
