Dairy packaging washdown system
Dairy packaging equipment depends on linear motion components that can survive repeated washdown cycles, cleaning chemicals, moisture, and corrosion risk without causing unplanned downtime. In this example, a dairy packaging manufacturer was experiencing repeated failures on milk carton caser equipment that used linear ball bearings running on 440-grade stainless steel shafting.
During daily washdown, cleaning solvents gradually oxidized the 440 stainless steel shafting, leading to rust, bearing failure, and eventual machine shutdowns. PBC Linear recommended a retrofit using 316 stainless steel Simplicity® plain linear bearings with 316 stainless steel shafting. The bearings were equipped with Frelon®J liners for chemical and corrosion resistance, while the self-lubricating plain bearing design reduced maintenance and eliminated the need for frequent lubrication.
After the retrofit, the dairy packaging manufacturer eliminated unplanned downtime related to the previous bearing and shafting failures. The washdown-ready combination of 316 stainless steel components and Frelon®J-lined Simplicity® bearings provided longer service life and more reliable operation in the milk carton caser system.
Needle-free livestock vaccination device
Livestock vaccination systems require reliable linear motion in harsh agricultural environments where dust, dirt, outdoor temperature swings, repeated shock, and high force are common. In this example, Acushot™ developed an automated needle-free injection gun for mass livestock vaccination, designed to reduce animal trauma, improve worker safety, and simplify vaccine tracking without relying on traditional needle-based injections.
The injection system needed a compact linear bearing solution capable of absorbing recoil from a gas-cylinder-driven mechanism producing up to 600 lb of force and injection pressures up to 28,000 psi. PBC Linear’s Simplicity® plain linear bearings with self-lubricating Frelon® liners provided smooth, maintenance-free travel while distributing recoil forces evenly across the bearing surface. Unlike bronze bushings or linear ball bushings, the plain bearing liner helped prevent shaft damage, contamination, and catastrophic failure under short-stroke, high-force cycling.
By using Simplicity® plain bearings, the Acushot device achieved durable, low-friction motion in stockyards and barnyards while reducing moving components in a lightweight, battery-powered design. The system helped minimize injection trauma, improve vaccination consistency, and support automatic dose documentation with time stamps, giving livestock operations a safer and more efficient way to manage animal health.
Pre-cast concrete transfer system
Agricultural and commercial pre-cast concrete production requires linear motion systems that can handle heavy loads, shock loading, moisture, dust, and long travel distances. In this example, a manufacturer needed to move heavy mold castings through a 100 ft transfer line, from fill to finish, while forklift drivers loaded and unloaded the castings onto the system.
PBC Linear recommended a Hevi-Rail™ heavy-duty combined cam-roller bearing and linear rail system using HVB-056 bearings and HVR-2 profile rails. The rail sections were welded together in 20 ft lengths to create the full 100 ft travel path, allowing the transfer system to move heavy mold loads at higher speeds while maintaining reliable guidance.
The Hevi-Rail™ system provided the shock-load capacity, heavy-load tolerance, and durability needed for the wet, dusty production environment. After seeing the improved reliability and speed of the first transfer line, the customer specified Hevi-Rail™ again when adding another line.
