PBC Linear delivers linear motion solutions for renewable energy and energy-efficient manufacturing applications where reliability, low friction, and long service life are essential. From solar furnace damper positioning and high-duty outdoor systems to sensor-equipped bearings that reduce energy waste, these components help improve motion control while lowering maintenance demands. Self-lubricating bearing technologies reduce the need for oils and greases, while corrosion-resistant materials support dependable performance in harsh environments. The examples below show how PBC Linear products help manufacturers improve efficiency, reduce waste, and support cleaner production systems.
Energy-saving paper dryer bearing retrofit
Renewable energy and energy-efficiency applications often depend on plain bearing technologies that reduce friction, lower power consumption, and extend equipment life. In this example, a paper plant was using Babbitt bearings in large cast iron dryer systems and experiencing frequent downtime, high startup energy demand, and premature bearing replacement due to extreme metal-to-metal contact during startup.
PBC Linear developed a custom plain bearing with integrated sensor capability to replace the older Babbitt bearing design. The self-lubricating bearing technology reduced friction during dryer startup, cutting the energy required to start the machine by up to 90%. By reducing wear between the bearing and dryer components, the retrofit also helped extend bearing life, lower maintenance demands, and improve overall production efficiency.
The built-in sensors provided early warning for preventative maintenance, allowing technicians to monitor bearing condition before failure occurred. After an initial trial using three custom sensor bearings, the paper plant expanded the retrofit with nine additional replacements, reducing energy waste, improving uptime, and supporting more efficient high-volume production.
Solar furnace heat damper positioning system
Solar panel manufacturing requires precise linear motion during the production of silicon ingots, where silicon ore is fused in large high-temperature furnaces before being sliced into wafers for solar panels. In this example, a silicon ingot manufacturer needed a low-cost, accurate, and reliable linear actuator to control the lifting and positioning of a heat damper used for precise furnace temperature control.
Because these furnaces operate at extremely high temperatures and can take days to cool for service, unreliable damper motion could create major production delays and added cost. PBC Linear recommended a PLA ball screw and v-rail linear actuator to provide controlled, repeatable motion for the damper system. The ball screw drive delivered the precision and reliability needed for critical positioning, while the actuator’s SIMO™ machined profile provided tight, consistent tolerances for repeatable guidance.
The PLA actuator also used Integral V™ V-rail technology to guide the actuator’s V-rollers with improved precision. Together, these features gave the manufacturer a cost-effective linear actuator solution that performed reliably in solar panel production, helping support efficient silicon ingot processing and renewable energy manufacturing.
Eco-friendly self-lubricating linear motion
Sustainable manufacturing depends on motion components that reduce waste, lower maintenance, and minimize the need for oils, greases, and frequent replacement parts. PBC Linear has supported eco-friendly linear motion since the introduction of Simplicity® self-lubricating linear bearings in the 1980s, using Frelon® liner technology to provide smooth motion without external lubrication.
Unlike traditional bearing systems that require ongoing grease or oil, Simplicity® bearings, Uni-Guide, Mini-Rail, and Low-Profile Uni-Guide products use self-lubricating plain bearing surfaces to reduce lubricant consumption and support cleaner operation. This helps manufacturers lower maintenance demands, reduce contamination risk, and extend service life in applications where reliability and environmental responsibility matter.
PBC Linear has also expanded sustainability efforts through recycling programs for paper, cardboard, steel, aluminum scrap, and wood, along with safe, non-toxic cleaning and material disposal practices. Through its internal Green Committee, the company continues to identify ways to reduce pollution, conserve energy, and support more responsible manufacturing practices.
